The Alūksne library project foresees a careful reconstruction of the historical stable/gymnasium building, which is a locally significant architectural monument, adding a modern extension and creating a harmonious dialogue between the past and the present in the heart of the city. The aim is a functionally well-thought-out, architecturally high-quality solution that respects the historic fabric.
The architectural concept respects the historical context, preserving and restoring the monument's values. The new extension is designed with a light, symbolic façade made of modern materials (metal mesh, vertical posts), reminiscent of book pages and covers, with proportions adjusted to the historical building. Both volumes are connected by a transparent glass structure that houses the main entrance.
The interiors of both building volumes are designed to be bright, functional, and fully accessible, offering modern library zones for various user groups – children, teenagers, and adults, while also preserving exposed fragments of the historic finishes.
The thoughtfully designed landscaping retains existing trees and offers diverse recreational and activity areas, including an interactive play area "Memo", spaces for outdoor exhibitions, recreational areas with smart device charging options, and the symbolic environmental installation "Tree". Convenient access to Lake Alūksne is also provided.
The vision of the project is to create a modern, accessible, and energy-efficient library in Alūksne – an inspiring community center that combines the city’s historical heritage with future possibilities.
